09/26/2000..catalyst, santa cruz, ca...

Hey all, the show tonight was superb.  Here are my top five for the show:
1.  The Red Elephant T-shirt - this thing rocks!
2.  48
3.  7 - not rusty at all, absolutely perfect.
4.  Phuerton Skeurto
5.  Great Opening Band, never heard of them...(not Euphone, in case you're wondering).  They're from LA and it was their first show ever.  Pretty straight ahead, but they have a harmonica.  Harmonicas rock!
Yup, you guys heard me.  7, 48 and Phuerton Skeurto all live.  Go to a show on this tour.
Top five raspberries:
1.  Assholes making bad 'real estate' jokes behind me.
2.  My friend beating me in a bet that she could get a set list.  Dammit >.<
3.  No Bucket of Chicken.  Ya gotta hope, y'know?
4.  $2 for a bottle of water.  Eep.
5.  Jeremy breaking two strings, Will's foot going numb.
==
OK, two things.  If anyone went to this show?  What was the opening band's name?  And who is that guy Steve?  Jeremy noticed him and pointed him out to Dan, who said "Holy Shit" into the mic, who then pointed it out to Will who was really surprised.  It was Steve, wasn't it?  Whatever.

I got to go the SF show as well, and I think I liked this one better for all the old stuff they played.  I don't have a setlist yet, but I'll post it when I get it.  The band still played a fair number of songs from the new album, One, Killed by an Angel, Snibe, Faces in Disguise, Rising Tide - but also a good amount from each individual album.  A really good number from Diary: 7, In Circles, Song About an Angel, Round (not positive...), Pherton Skeurto, 48.  Damn, 48.  :-)
The show didn't quite go as smoothly as the other ones I've seen, since Jeremy broke two strings and had problems getting his mic right.  Also, it seemed like some of the songs just didn't flow as well as they did before...it's kind of hard to explain.  I'm sure some of them are a little rusty.  7 and 48 were orgasmic though.  They are reason enough to drive many miles for this show.
Party On,
Daedalus <layer3dog@yahoo.com>
PS:  I'm from Florida - I feel your pain people.

All I have to say is they played Seven. When they played The Blankets Were the Stairs, Jeremy did his legendary scream as well and not the falsetto. Place didn't pack out completely but probably because it's Santa Cruz on a week night and people can't or didn't want to drive the traffic to get there. Show was incredible

FIVE songs off of Diary...  That's more than I ever expected...  The show was fantastic.  The whole band was really having fun.  Especially Jeremy, who even talked a lot.  (In stark contrast to the LA shows a few months ago where he looked really sick of touring and barely said a word.)  He did a Thom Yorke-esque dance around the stage a lot while he played.  (you know, the weird bobbing head, shaking leg thing.)
The venue is really unique because it's outdoors, but a small amphitheater with seats.  Everyone sat down for the show, except for the encore.  Dan actually encouraged everyone to sit.  He said he liked it that way.
A few of the more memorable quotes I can recall...Dan introduced 48 by saying they hadn't played it in a really long time.
Someone yelled something from the audience and Dan said, "Dude.  It's NOT gonna be "Bucket of Chicken".  Come on."
At one point, someone yelled to Jeremy, "Will you ever play solo again?" and he replied, "Eventually, yes.  Any other questions, now that it's interview hour?"
Pheurton Skeurto was a fantastic choice to open with.  The whole band plays on it, not just Jeremy as I might have thought.  They really rock it out during the last third of the song.  48 was AMAZING.  (Dan's quote afterwards:  "What do you think?  Did we learn it right?")  And Jeremy does, in fact, scream the end of the chorus.  The Prophet was so good, it's insane, although Jeremy did not scream the end.  Seven was much, much better than I remember it being live before.  (although the last time I heard it live was in 94 or something...)  And Faces in Disguise was really good, too. Much more rockin' than mellow.
The opening act was "Pete Yorn".  Not my cup of tea...  He sounded like a mix of Dave Matthews Band and Pearl Jam to me (and looked like Matt Dillon from "Singles").  I'm not sure how he got picked as the opener.  I saw a band called "The Sheila Divine" the night before this show and THAT'S a band that could have kicked some ass opening for SDRE...  But that's just my opinion.
On a sadder note, the Radiohead show just sold out in, like, twenty seconds.   Leaving me ticketless.  sniff, sniff.

10/12/2000...NorVA, norfolk, va...

hey all,

my name is Matt and i'm from Virginia, and i used to be a member of this list way back in the day [pre HIFTBSO] and somehow got booted off or something, becuase i never remember un-subscribing.  anyhow, i'm back.
i also was lucky enough to get to see the band this past thursday at theNorva Theatre in Norfolk, Virginia.  great show!  [btw, if anyone has a boot of this show, or any others in the new tour, email me, i'd like to arrange some kind of trade or something]  i got to talk to the Jeremy quite extensively after the show, and was able to tell him how stoked i was to hear old songs like Pheurton [done all out with guitars and all... wow] and Seven.  Jeremy said they are having a great time on the road, and i got to ask him all kinds of questions like "would you ever do another live album?' [he answered that he wasn't a fan of the idea], and "is God still a part of your daily life?" [which was prefaced with how i thought it was great that he was a christian, and how i wondered if it still mattered to the band, to which he replied that it depends on the day.  somedays he feels God is watching him, and others he's not so sure.  so it's still in the back of his mind.]  we also got to talk about Dan's wedding [which Jeremy wasn't even at], TSMAP [which is the tshirt i bought and got him to sign], the last time i saw the band [it was at CMJ in 1998 w/the Spinanes, Murder City Devils, and others, and he actually rememberd that gig!], and other things that i don't remember right this minute.
all in all it was a great show that you should all try and catch if theytravel near you.

10/13/2000...trax, charlottesville, va...

just got back from the sunny day show in charlottesville, virginia.  they played with euphone, those guys were pretty damn
impressive.  their drummer is phenomenal.
i've seen sdre 3 times now, and until tonight i had been hesitant to place them as my all time favorite live show, even though they
are by far my favorite band.  well, tonight that changed in a major way.  this performance blew away the previous two.  they played absolutely flawless, and with maximum energy.  and the sound was amazing.  they rocked out every song as much as possible, even pillars and 100 million were hard-hitting.  the night was definitely highlighted by phuerton skuerto.  when the rest of the band came in full force i could not believe what i was hearing.  they could have played like crap for the rest of the night and i would have been satisfied.  other favorites were seven, of course, the prophet, song about an angel, and the ocean.  but all were perfect, absolutely perfect.  jeremy and dan hung out outside afterward (where was will?).  dan is just the nicest guy.  i had never talked to jeremy before, he was hilarious.  he was joking about how many people were shouting "seven."  they definitely didn't seem pained by playing that one.  "this tour has been more about the fans," said jeremy.

(rough) setlist:

Phuerton Skeurto
One
Killed by an Angel
The Ocean
Song about an Angel
48
Pillars
100 Million
Every Shining Time You Arrive
J'nuh
Faces in Disguise
In Circles

(encore)
The Prophet
Seven
The Rising Tide

10/16/2000...birch hall, old bridge, nj...

last night I saw sunny day for the first time. I was not let down one bit.
same great set... all the songs from diary were steller and J'Nuh just about killed me with joy. Now I know how much the song requests are... its really kills the mood.
they stoped in the middle of 8 because there was a fight going on... that was the biggest thing that happened. I dont wanna give a big overview of the show cause its the same show that has been reviewed a million times now...but I have never seen a band having so much fun on stage, I have never rocked out so hard at a show, and I have never gotten a shirt at a show for 10 bucks.
god bless.
euphone was good but I wasnt in the mood for it  I was to pumped for sunny day to really get into them, that kinda sucks...

10/18/2000...lupos, providence, ri...

Just wanted to say thanks to all the great fans out at the Providence and Boston Shows.  The guys really seemed to feed off of the energy there, and they put on one hell of a show, especially providence.  Dan said it was the best crowd he's ever played to, but I think I've heard him say that a couple of times, so...  I got to talk to his wife at the Boston show for a while, she's such a nice person.  Very real and down to earth.  The baby's due Christmas day, and everything is going great so far.  Of course, she's not staying on tour with them. She's safe and sound in NH (a great place to raise a child if you ask me), that's where her parents are from, and she will be until after the baby's born, I believe.
Back to the crowd thing, thanks to everyone who made Sunny Day have a good time, cause that's what keeps them coming back!
I hope that those of you who went to Providence got there early enough to see the opening band.  Cursive was incredible!  Poor Euphone, having to follow them.  Helluva nice bunch of guys too.

Thanks for listening,
