Yeah, you could say they played really tight. They were so into
EACHOTHER, sometimes that's a rarity. But, everything about that show overshadowed
they're pressence on stage, making it my first, and last SDRE show.
I might have been the only person on earth to have known the location was
changed, but regardless, I showed up at St. Andrews with my thumb up my
ass. I drove to Clutch's still eagerly awaiting for what I thought would
be an incredible experience. They packed the place so tight, it was
difficult to get even a glimpse. No Knife was impressive. I
only caught 3 songs, but I will soon be looking for recordings. SDRE
played a few songs I was interested in, the rest went in
and out. Jeremy was nothing to write home about. They did
play well together, but the fact that only one of them bothered to thank
the crowd, and only three of them introduced themselves, it was like they
forgot that hundreds of kids put up what little money they had to come
see the band. It was the most impersonal concert I had ever seen.
They ran out of merchandise, didn't show up for the in-store, and Jeremy
did a horrible, aweful thing. Like every other "rock-star," held
his guitar high in the air, then slammed it as hard as he could into the
floor. "Was I at a Limp Bizkit concert?" I asked myself. Sorry guys.
You might have to take me off this list unless someone else can convince
me they're worthy of my time and ears. I liked the music, but I could've
managed without the band.
Isn't there some poor inner city kid who could've used that guitar
to become something? That's rock-n-roll for you.

hello all.
i was at the detroit show, i would like to say that it was a good show
even though the venue isnt the best sound-wise, which even dan admitted
after the show...
thats right i was one of a lucky few people (about 9 of us) who got
to hang out with the band after the show...
most of the other people i was with wernt even sunnyday fans just folks
who worked for BMG or timebomb..
i would have to say that dan is the nicest guy i met out of the band..
granted i didnt meet jermey because he opted not to come over to us, and
i was under the impression not to approach him..
alas i digress dan offered me a slice of pizza, i declined we talked
about the venue
i offered my compliments about the show and there musicianship.. it
was nice..
signed
satisfied in detroit

Well, the only thing i can say about the show at Clutch Cargo's was
- I took 3 people who'd only heard Sdre a few times, and they all came
away impressed enought to purchase cd's and such.. I was happy to snag
the one No Knife cd i was missing.. a TSMAP tshirt..and to enjoy a really
good set.. I missed a bit of 'In circles' as my bro has a bad knee
and wanted to bail, but still I was very happy with the show and the venue.
I caught them last time at St. Andrews and that was nice as well, but
i have to say i think there were a few more people at CCs... the whole
'standing in the rain' preshow pretty much sucked esp since doors were
supposed to have been at 8, but i guess it's really no biggie. Speaking
of 8, i'd like to
apologize to the young lady (assuming she's on the list) that i kept
bumping into during that song, but i was craning my neck and standing on
tiptoe.. =/
nothing to really report to the list on the set, it was the 'standard'
one so far this tour.. but the backup guy sounded fine to me.. and
yes you still couldn't hear Dan.. sigh, i wish he'd sing more. Oh, and
as for introductions, like you DON'T know who's who in sdre? =P
Elricj <elricj@voyager.net>
i was at the detroit show, even though it wasn't in detroit. I
like to say clutch cargos is better, but it isn't. the only thing
nice was the 'no smoking' policy. everybody had to wait in the rain
for at least, i dunno, say 45 min past doors open (8:00). When we
got in, we found out most of the merch was ethier odd-sized, or gone, but
i still picked up a cool t-shirt. anybody else think those stickers
were pathetic? we didn't have to wait to long for no knife, but i
wish i hadn't seen them at all. i kept wishing they would stop.
(no offense, of course, to thier fans) Later, sdre's sound
guy came out, and fiddled with all the shit for quite a while. i
would have to say that is one ugly roadie:) then sunny day came on,
and that was cool. One thing to note about clutch cargoes, really
really shitty acoustics. they didn't sound too good. some songs
i'd say dans guitar was too loud, others, it was hard to hear jeremy.
Some guy yealled out "foo fighters suck", and dan lauged at that.
that was funny.. someone else yelled out "bucket of chicken" and
dan said never name a song that, or you'll
never hear the end of it, or something to that effect. i'd say
they sounded off on a lot of songs myself, or out of practice, and some
songs it was really on. i liked they harder stuff, it sounded better
live, 'specially lp2 stuff. they didn't talk to much to the crowd,
but they were interesting to watch anyways. dan never stopped...
dancing, if thats what he was doing. a lot of energy, always a good
thing. The set was quick, or maybe it just seemed quick... but all
in all it was pretty good, but defintly not the best show i've been too.
The coolest thing was the encore. all the songs fucking rocked.
The coolest thing was during 'in circles' when jermey's
guitar went out, or he just got frustrated, he lifted it over his head,
and smashed it on the stage. dan didn't seem to notice. the
touring guitarist offerd jermey the guitar, and he refused. he just
sang the rest of the song... that was the best part. sorry so long,
keith <Nisushawk@aol.com>
dan and jeremy both thanked the crowd. the people that were introduced
were because they are not members of the band and so deserved an introduction,
while it was assumed the audience would know the band members' names..
all in all, i thought the concert was good. not as good as the
last detroit show. i was hoping for more songs from diary, but in
circles as the last song was perfect.. i was internally wishing they'd
play it at
that moment, so it was completely satisfying. i was surprised
when jeremy threw down his guitar, but in a good way, it was interesting
to see that sort of anger come out of him, it isn't usually shown.
as for the rest of the set- i haven't really been appreciating the
rising tide.. there are a couple songs on it that annoy me and a couple
others that just don't sound as original and complex as their earlier
work. i was pretty disappointed -since i had convinced myself
that they could never come out with anything bad! but at the concert,
i found myself really enjoying most of the new songs- when they opened
with 'fool..' it was so intense! and in 'killed by an angel' jeremy
came the closest to his old-style screaming that i've heard. snibe
was so good, too.. and i think the most beautiful part of the concert was
'tearing..' jeremy's humming in the chorus is just amazing.
i too wish dan would sing more.. at least he still sings live to the
old songs he was on.. william was awesome as always. i was so glad they
played guitar and video games... the drums in that song are so good.
anyway, enough of my rambling. the show was good, i wish they'd
played longer of course, i was surprised at the amount of people lined
up by 7:30, glad i got a tshirt and patch before they ran out of stuff.
by the way, does anyone know where the crazy design of the antler-people
falling off a tree came from? is it in the new album liner notes?
i only have the promo copy so far.
thanks

Well, just got back-ish from the Toronto show, and just some notes and
musings...
- At the merch table they said they only had "small" t-shirts due to
a hold-up in customs, which I thought was funny because what's thier excuse
when they aren't playing in Canada? (I've gotten the impression they only
have small shirts at some shows in the US too lately).
- They also said they sold out of the pillowcases but they would probably
have them up on the website soon.
- The place was about 3/4 full, had the band on a raised stage so you
could see them well from almost anywhere in the venue, which was nice.
The female bartenders were also nice. Ahem. Some sort of
seating would have been nice - my friend and I sat on speakers near the
back that wern't being used, but most people probably got sick of standing.
- Faces in Disguise I believe was played, in response to someone saying
they aren't playing it anymore. I don't have a set list but they
played the usual.
- Dan's mic, if it was on, was on really low and if he sang during
"8", I didn't hear it.
- Also didn't hear any song requests either from the crowd.
- No Knife were nothing special - generic brandston-getupkid-etc-alternative
stuff. There was a huge differenec in complexity between NK and SDRE...
the crowd either thinned out after NK
played, which I find hard to believe, or they simply crowded the stage,
and it looked like there was less people becuase they all squished in together.
I thought the sound was pretty good too, although during Guitar and
Video Games one of the guitars just sounded...off, although they were probably
just playing the notes differently. Ok show. I hope they come
back
again.

First off, I won't bother writing the setlist, because it was the exact
sameas detroit, and the last few shows before that.
Overall, the show was incredible. We arrived around the middle of No
Knife's set. However, we didn't go right in, because just as we were about
to enter the venue, my friend stopped suddenly and said to me "Hey, look
behind you!" Sure enough, Jeremy was there, just hanging out around the
bus and talking to people. After some debating, we went up and told him
how great he was and how excited we were for the show. He told us that
he loves Canada and is working on getting a Canadian citizenship. We also
gave him a couple CD's of our band, and he seemed genuinely happy to get
them (although I'm sure he gets dozens of cd's at every show....) We didn't
want to bother him too
much, so we only talked for a couple minutes and then went in. No Knife
was good - I'm not all that familiar with their stuff but they were definitely
better than your average opening band. About 30 minutes after their set,
SDRE took the stage to a huge applause. The first thing we heard was Dan
saying "well, it's been about 7 years....." and they seemed happy to
be back in town. They played brilliantly...Jeremy's voice was definitely
in top form. They didn't seem to mind all the requests for songs - When
somebody requested 'Television' Dan said "now THERE's someone who's heard
the new album!" I think the highlights were Tearing in my heart, J'nuh
(& I don't even like that song too much!), Snibe, and the Rising Tide.
My only regret is that they didn't play longer, or more songs. It was Will's
birthday and people kept singing happy birthday to him. He looked like
he was having a
great time with the shirt off and the funny faces flying. So all in
all, it was an amazing show that could only have been improved if it was
longer!

Hey List
Well I'm a bit late with this, but the Toronto show was absoloutely
amazing. Not only did that happen to be my first time seeing Sunny
Day, it was also my first REAL concert (sucky high-school bands don't count).
Lance was right when he said there could have been some sort of seating.
I wound up standing near the sound-board thingy the whole time and needless
to say my feet got tired afterwards. I guess thats how some people like
to go to concerts anyway. Their best song was probably 8 or Guitar
and Video Games, but they were all good. I was disappointed that
I wasn't able to get TRT before the show (you may remember my incident
with HMV and importing the damn CD... more on that in a sec) so many of
the songs I hadn't heard before. It was all very good though.
Dan is most amusing to watch... and you may be interested to hear that
my girlfriend thinks he's cute (I remember a post saying that some girls
thought Jeremy and Will were cute, but not Dan). I was very impressed
with No Knife and I think that I'm going to try to find one of their CD's
up here. Could someone please post/send me the setlist from the show,
because I didn't know the names of the new songs they played.
As for The Rising Tide, I did finally pick it up (at the show of course)
and it was a very good price (less than importing from stupid HMV).
I found the release information for the new record in Canada from Timebomb.
It is being released on 7/20 in Canada so anyone who is still waiting will
have to wait a bit longer. My first reactions to the album are fairly
good, though there are a couple somewhat weak songs. Snibe definately
stands out, but I'm not sure they played it at the show (I didn't recognize
it). Again, I'd like the setlist to check that out.
I just have one more thing on my mind that I'd like to ask everyone.
You all know about the conflict
between Will and Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters and that seems to create
an awfully negative image of the Foo Fighters on this list. I was
a Foo Fighters fan first, and I was wondering if there is anyone else like
me on here? I'm I at a minority here? I hope you don't hate
me! :-) Anyways... have a good day all.

the montreal show last night was incredible! it was one of the best
if not the best show i've ever experienced. they played the same set that
was [played at the other shows on the tour. if you'd like the exact set
list, you can e-mail me. i was particularly struck by their intensity.
Killed by an angel isn't my fav from the new album but it was absolutely
ferocious last night! i have a new respect for that tune. the ocean, J'nuh,
8 and in circles also made the hairs on my arms and neck stand up. no knife
were rad and very tight. the only prob was with the mix. jeremy's vocals
were buried in the mix, especially during the louder songs. and you couldn't
hear dan or the keyboardist when they sang back-up. dan guitar was sometimes
a little harsh in the mix, but none of this distracted from an amazing
show. let's face it, you'll never have perfect sound at a live show.
anyone notice how jeremy's vocals sound like gowan
at times on the rising tide?
ry <rbresee@idirect.com>
hey. here's the set list:
fool, pillars, one, the ocean, killed by an angel, guitar and video
games, snibe, every shining time you arrive, disappear, tearing in my heart,
j'nuh. Encore: 8, rising tide, circles.
Review for July 5 show in Montreal, at the Cafe Campus:
I went to the Montreal show with some band mates, and we had no idea
what to expect. We had all been huge Sunny Day fans for some time, but
we had never seen the band because they had never come to eastern Canada
before the Toronto show on July 4 (to my knowledge, anyway). I'm happy
to say that the two hour haul from Ottawa was certainly worth it, and everything
about the concert made it the perfect experience. No knife is one of the
best opening bands I've seen, and can be described as a band that mixes
interesting indie rock grooves with a Weezer sensibility. The excellent
sound quality at the Cafe Campus really brought out the best of both bands,
and certainly gave
everyone a taste of how potent Jeremy Enigk's vocals are when un-produced.
I was standing right in front of the stage, and although this usually means
sacrificing some of the sound quality, almost none of the ambience was
lost. Sunny Day didn't talk with the crowd too much, but Dan got a good
laugh when he said that if they'd ever been to Montreal, he must have been
trashed because he couldn't remember. One girl started to yell "SOMETIMES"
repeatedly, and Jeremy got the crowd going by passing her these really
weird looks. We met them all after the show, and Jeremy came over and had
a beer with us at a nearby patio. We talked about music, life, and related
subjects until the tour bus left. I would like to disprove the claim that
Jeremy Enigk is not an approachable person. He just seemed exhausted after
the show, and this is understandable. The fact is, the band has a rigorous
touring schedule, and they work harder than people know. William and
Dan both had the flu at the time, and this is probably why the band put
up posters around the club, saying "At the request of Sunny Day Real Estate,
would you please not smoke in the room tonight"(one of which will become
a poster in my room shortly, along with William's set list). Also, when
I spoke to Jeremy, he seemed to be humbled by and shy about the fact that
even one person was so inspired by his music, let alone many. Sunny Day
Real Estate are not only a superb musical unit live, but they are superb
individuals. I encourage anyone who is unfamiliar with them to get familiar
quick.
