07/03/99...fort mason, san francisco, ca...

july 3rd:

my mind was pretty cloudy and hazy by the time they came on, but I can
tell you the songs I remember.

pillars
guitar and vid games
the blankets were the staris (???? I know it was from diary, and I know
they played it, but when is still murky to me)

then they played a whole lot more of HIFTBSO.  with some lp2 mixed in
(including rodeo jones)  Encore was:
In Circles
roses in water
days were golden

I just have a hard time remembering the setlist during the middle.  Next
time, I'll bring a pad and pencil.

In related news: sunset valley was ok. Mike Watt was cool, but the singing
got in the way sometimes.  Before they let us in, Jeremy was in and out of
the place, but nobody noticed until they saw him take the mic.  I guess
we're all used to blurry pixelated gif's from the web, because I know now
that he looks different from 3 feet away on the street than he does on the
web.  I looked into the windows of the little cafe under the hall, and
definitely was able to see dan (or some other distinctly bearded fellow)
but I was walking and talking with someone at the time, and didn't see
anyone else.

I also would like to hear about the july 4th show, especially where/when
they played in relation to the other bands.  I dream of a show where SDRE
was on the mainstage, and some better known bands were in the rinky-dink
stage they put together in the parking lot.  Don't get me wrong, I like
Sonic Youth, but I would like to see SDRE on the big stage, with the big
crowd.

NE-WAY...
definitely the high point of the weekend.  If you do have the means to see
them, I DO reccomend going.

The 3rd was a great show!  I was a bit dissapointed with the turnout, as they
never opened the balcony.  There were alot more people last Nov. at
Marritime, I'm not sure why... but the show was great anyway!  I have to
admidt to not caring much for a few songs off of HIFTBSO, mainly 100 million,
Roses In Water, The Prophet, and Two Promises.  They played 3 of those on
Saturday and they sounded great.  Those songs are much better live than was
captured on the CD!  And of course, the Diary and LP2 songs are all great and
are always great live!  Did anyone catch Dan kicking it in the back watching
Mike Watt for a bit?...  Now if only I can find a way to get my job to send
me to Japan for a bit.... Steve.

the 4th show was the first time i finally got to see sdre live (damn,
that and far shows are the closest feeling to heaven in my opinion).
anyways- does the band usually all wear white shirts at shows, cuz i
thought it was some weird thing that they read the posts from this list
when someone said to wear white shirts so you guys would know who's on
the list and stuff (sorry, i didn't conform- don't really know any of
ya!) but just bein' curious....
sdre was on the main stage.  there were actually 2 main stages right
next to each other so while one band was playing, the next was setting
up... so yer dream came true.  = )  at the drive in shoulda been on a
main stage though too!  they freakin ROCKED and it was sooo crowded
watching them.

that was the 4th time i've seen sdre and it was  not as good as the other
times. they played a lot of  hiftbso, circles, but most importantly, they
ended with j'nuh. they played others too. the energy wasn't the same. it
kinda of felt like it was a very good cover band because it didn't have
the same effect. rocket from the crypt played well and so did the get up
kids and at the drive-in! the day was great but sdre wasn't the same.

hello all.
i just thought i'd throw in my commentary on july 4th.  though sunny day real estate is the world's greatest band, it was evident that jeremy was a bit discouraged by the "out-of-tune-ness" of his guitars. even when that guy would come bring a new one on stage, it never really seemed like it was in tune with dan and  joe. i noticed one thing about jeremy's stage performance. when he wants to get into it, he'll shake his head left and right, like he's saying no. i think some of that shaking has to do with him thinking, "NO, this is NOT in TUNE".\ i have got that sentiment when i have played before,
and it's hard not to let that angst show. my point is simply that him being out of tune had a  negative effect on their joy/confidence on stage.  i noticed how joe tried to look like it was all ok when jeremy was comparing his g with the g on joe bass, and then when he turned to look at dan he just smiled in his sweet way, but HEY, when you're out of tune, you're out of tune. if you notice i've said nothing about will, it's because he was AWESOME...kept the songs' tempo even, and even had a "boxing coach" guy put a towel on him and encourage him in between songs (GO ROCKY).

on a positive note, they TORE EVERYONE ELSE UP!! :)

bye.
jonathan deane

p.s.
does anyone know the mysterious identity behind that guy who brings out their guitars, and the guy who would  encourage will in between songs???
p.p.s.
let's all say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to mr. goldsmith. how nice of him to share his birthday memories with us all at the show by playing. :)

To add to the swarm of opinions of the July 4th show...

Sunny Day was great, but definitely frustrated by the fact that they weren't
using they're own equipment.  (anyone know why?  Sonic Youth's van was
stolen the night before, causing them to play with borrowed equipment...
not sure why SDRE did.  They said they "left it at home")  Despite the
frustrations, In Circles, Song About an Angel and The Prophet all sounded
remarkably strong.  But some of the other songs fell short of their usual
power.

i was at the 4th show (wearing a blue north park t-shirt) & thought jeremy's vocals were way too
soft.  dan seemed in great spirits, balancing out jeremy's troubled looks.  still, i always get the
feeling i'll never see them again, so i enjoyed every minute.  i can't help but be moved by their
music.  who was the girl in the red shirt taking pix during sonic youth from the side of the stage?  i
saw her at the greek in berkeley as well.  i'd love to see those pictures somewhere.   and i hope someone got a picture of sleater watching sonic, it was great.

Hi everybody

I just came back from the first SDRE show in Japan! It was sooo amaging! I had a great time.
The show started at about 1:30 AM(!).
Here's the set list.

Pillars
GAVG
TBWTS
100Million
ESTYA
SAAA
Prophet
HIFTBSO
Roses In Water
Rodeo Jones
J'nuh
------
In  Circles
Days Were Golden

I think the show was almost the same with the other shows in the US. They did extra long J'nuh part. Will kept druming after other guys left at the end of Days Were Golden.
The guys seemed to be happy with the audience.

So far my favorite live song is Prophet. It was so intense!
I am going to other 2 shows!!!

07/18/99...club citta, kawasaki, jpn...

Tonight was another amaging night. The audience was enjoying the show and the guys looked happier.
The set was almost the same with the other night's. They didin't play Roses In Water.
I think the first show was better because I could not hear bass lines clearly tonight. And Will was having troubles with his drums.
But J'nuh sounded better today.

Anyway, five Japanese bands played before SDRE.
Four of them were emo bands and they were relly cool. You should check out Naht, Drumkan, Wedge and Switch Style.
