please send any reviews you would like to share to  jlondon@okc.oklahoma.net ...please try to include opening acts if known as well as a setlist...

4/26/99...hub ballroom, university of washington, seattle, wa

Hello everyone, I went to the show tonight at the HUB and it was incredible!
Just to answer all questions about the "new song played during the sound
check", it was not played.  My friend and I got the set list, and it wasn't
even written and then scratched out.  It is exciting to know that there is
something new out there, but what they did play was amazing as always.  My
friend and I got to stand up on the sound board platform to video and take
pictures due to the kindness and coolness of the one and only Greg
Williamson.  If you're reading this, thanks again Greg!!  Now that I'm
thinking of it the opening bands (Stella Maris and Death Cab for Cutie) were
actually quite good themselves, but by the time the guys had started Pillars
I had forgotten anything beforehand.  So, here's the setlist as given to us
by Greg and played by SDRE:
Pillars
G&VG
Blanx
100
ESTYA
Angel
Prophet
FEELS
Waffle
JNUH
---------
Circles
Roses
DAZE

Pretty much the standard fare of Sunny Day intense and inspiring songs.  The
"j'nuh" part of J'nuh is always different everytime I see them.  It was
awesome as always.  But the biggest change was a new "loud" portion of Days
Were Golden.  Will is usually playing his intricate rim-tap thing basically
the whole time, but he slammed away on the cymbals and the whole song got
loud for a while, I think Jeremy added another verse, but I'm not sure.
Needless to say it was very cool and then they finished it out with Jeremy
putting down his guitar, singing the extra verse he usually does (and I
never understand :) and then everyone leaving except Will.  He slammed away
on his set while the audience clapped along with and once he felt he had
done his work he left as well.  The show was definitely a good one and the
crowd was really cool.  Harldy a mosher was to be seen and only during In
Circles did I see a large number of people jumping up and down, but nothing
that was obnoxious.  The guys were very into the songs (as always) and I
can't really think of much else to say because it hasn't really hit me how
cool it all was.  It is now very late and I really need to get to sleep so
that I can study in the AM for a psych test which I would have been studying
for earlier this afternoon/evening, but I had more important things to tend
to. :-)

Andy Lewis <lewisah@plu.edu>

hey all

well, just got back from the UW show, and it was very awesome, as
sunny day always is. they didn't play anything new, basically the
same stuff they usually play. the set list:

pillars
guitar and video games
the blankets were the stairs
100 million
every shining time you arrive
song about an angel
the prophet
how it feels to be something on
waffle
j'nuh

encore:
in circles
roses in water
days were golden

so there ya have it. the only down point of their set was during the
beginning, they had feedback problems with jeremy's mic. but after
they fixed that, all was good.
the opening bands were both pretty cool too. stella maris was REAL
chill, nothing hard or heavy at all. but that's cool with me, i'm
into that sorta stuff. and death cab for cutie was more on the faster
and somewhat heavier side. the singer got into it a little with some
fan up near the front who was apparently givin him a hard time. it
was pretty funny. anyways, i don't have much else to say, mainly cuz
i'm about dead tired right now. hope all the rest of you who went had
a great time like i did. take care. =)

john d west <little_psycho1@hotmail.com>

I just walked in door and am still glowing warmly from a really good
show.  I really have to hand it to the two opening acts, Stella maris
and especially death cab for cutie who had to put up with the
obnoxious dumb ass standing next to me (if you were anywhere near the
front you know who) but in honesty when do you really get to go to a
show where each band did a really solid set.  I've seen other opening
acts for sdre (heroic doses, mk ultra, two bands in bellingham whose
names slips the memory and a couple in SLC as well) but none have
really impressed me as much as the two this evening.
Sunny Day played a good solid set like clock work and i was happy to
see some variation in the set list, even if the "new song" wasnt
included.  i am slipping away in to sleep but i wanted to post
something.
i hope all who were ther enjoyed it as much as i
pleasant dreams

> Just to answer all questions about the "new song played during the sound

yup... i've heard that there will be no new tunes live until they start working
on the new record...

> But the biggest change was a new "loud" portion of Days Were Golden.  Will is
> usually playing his intricate rim-tap thing basically the whole time, but he
> slammed away on the cymbals and the whole song got loud for a while, I think

this was amazing.  it took everyone totally by surprise... at first i thought
they were about to play another song.  there was a totally new verse too.  no
extra verse on the bridge on "in circles" though.

okay, a lot of people have already posted about the show, so i'll just throw in
some random comments.

joe sang back-up on almost every song, a lot more than dan...

dan commented on how he "was never much for school spirit, but it's great to
back here"

still a lot of dumbasses yelling for "seven"... grr... one guy even went as far
as, while they were switching guitars, to yell "that better be the guitar you
play 'seven' on!"

a request for "48" was greeted with "i like that request, i wish we knew them
all" from dan.

i've had death cab for cutie's cd for a while now... but their live show blew me
away.  they are very, very few bands out there that could follow death cab's
set.  sdre is, of course, one of them.

they sold the lp2 and hiftbso shirts and stuff (that you can order from
sunnydayrealestate.com) at the show...

a few of my friends ran into dan before the show, and asked what they were going
to play, and dan said "we'll be playing a few songs we haven't played in a
while."  which (although sunny day was of course beyond awesome) left me kind of
disappointed because it was pretty much the same set they always play.

they played shudder to think over the p.a. between bands, that was kinda cool...

there was this really cool chick who gave me a pen so i could write down the set
list... if yr reading, you rule!

speaking of cool people, mad shout-outz to the famous matt carlson (if he's
still on the list), alicia, and those other cool people i always see at sunny
day shows...

in another kinda related note, i'm convinced that as far as hot chicks go...
female sunny day fans are #1 on the list.

stella marris was pretty cool... it has the guitar player from tool.... my
friend alex, between one of their songs, yelled, "that guy from tool rules!"
really loud... and the whole band stopped and looked at each other... that was
pretty funny....

will didn't waste any time, that shirt was off by the third song.

going to denny's after seeing sdre is about the biggest anti-climax ever.

anthony <anthony@foxinternet.net>

Ok, I just have to say that if I didn't beleive in one all powerful mighty
God, then Jeremy Enigk would be one. : )
The show sounded incredible of course..how could you expect anything less.
I was a little worried when Stella Maris and Death Cab played because the
sound was terrible in the HUB (which by the way for all you people who
haven't seen them before...Death Cab, while they always sound pretty good,
that show was definatly not impressive for me.  I have seen them before and
they can sound A Lot better)
Anyways, what is more important, is Sunny Day.  This was the first time I
have gotten the privelage to see them.. I have seen Jeremy solo 4 time but I
haven't seen Sunny Day.. and I was definatly impressed.  There music always
manages to blow me away and seeing them live was like a dream come true!!

Well, I won't ramble anymore cause I know there were lots of people who wrote
about this show but I just had to share. : )

Chrystal <Hangydingy@aol.com>

Hey all-
I won't go write a book about the show, because lots of people have already
written about it.  But there are a couple of things I wanted to say.  First
of all, this was my first time seeing SDRE and I was ecstatic.  The show left
me shaking so hard that I thought I was having a seizure, I was so weak that
I could barely feel my hands and I could not breath right.  At the end of the
show the tears welled up in my eyes and if I'd had the strength, I would have
bawled.  Needless to say, I have never experienced anything like it.  I'm
sure everyone's first live experience must have been similar.  I really wish
they would have played "Rodeo Jones" but oh well.  I scored a drumstick!!
Did anyone see them after? Just wondering...
And in response to what Anthony said about girl SDRE fans being hot, same
thing goes for the guys.  Wow...they were cute.  Anyhoo:)
*Agnes* <BlueGrl713@aol.com>
P.S.  Death Cab was awesome!

Hey, everybody.  Last night's show was AMAZING! Of course you know it was. Man, I hadn't seen sunny day in like 5 months, it felt like an eternity. I've now seen sdre 5 times. How spoiled I am...good thing I never get sick of them.
So anyway about the show.  I got there about a half hour early and ran into Anthony Schmidt (hard name to spell). That was cool.  He's the only other lister I know by face besides my man Josh Nollette. But yeagh. The doors opened and I ran to the very front. Always the best way to see sunny day.  I had my girlfriend save my place in the front while I went and spent all my remaining 1 dollar bills on the various different sdre stickers (the same ones they have for sale at the page). Stella Maris took the stage. They were pretty cool. On the mellow side, but that's not necesarilly a bad thing. The thing that really made their set not too enjoyable for me is that the bass drum was about 2 feet away from my face. I had to plug my ears the whole time to keep the drums from imploding my skull.
But anyway...Death Cab gets up there. I have been listening to their album lately which is very good. But the guy who posted about the sound was right, it sounded kinda shitty, but I really enjoyed their set. And the conflict with the bastard guy with the goatee and lip ring who was just giving them the bird the whole time and jumping up and down, that was hilarious. The Death Cab singer was saying: "Hey, your here to see sunny day real estate, right? This isn't a Korn show!" and stuff like: "Am I not 'alternative' enough for you, is that it? Well, sorry"  The guy got embarassed cause the whole crowd was laughing at him and left.
But now let's get down to what it's all about: sunny day real estate. I always get a kick out of the 'sunny day stage team' that sets their stuff up. I noticed William got a new drumset. It's like a sparkely red color, I'm not sure what brand it is, his old one was that really nice purple Ayotte. I don't know why he replaced it, but his new one sounds just as good. But they get up there and start playing Pillars. Right off the bat I notice something a bit odd: They are NOT RUSHING! On all the sunny day boots I have from the new album tour, except their FIRST SHOW in seattle last July, they rushed (speed up the tempo) of all the songs, it never really bugged me, but it did kind of take away from a bit of the intensity. But this time they were playing the slow, eerie, intense feeling of Pillars just like it is on the record.  They held the tempo wonderfully throughout the whole set.  I don't know if they like, listened to the record and said "Hey, we always play it faster th!
an that" or something, or if it was not purposely. But it was cool.
Man, it's so awesome to be in front at a SDRE show, William was like 5 feet in front of me, we were constantlly making eye contact the whole show. And Dan would always go RIGHT UP next to the crowd and just play all wildly like he does, rolling his head around and stuff.  I took a whole role of b&w pictures of the show, I can't wait to get them back, they're gonna be awesome.
After playing G&V they played The Blankets were the stairs. Totally intense. This was the LOUDEST time I've ever seen Sunny Day Real Estate. The drums were probablly louder than the first band but it didn't bother me because I love William's drumming so much. But the volume level of the show really  added to the intensity.  One thing I noticed that kind of dissapointed me was that Jeremy got another guitar that he tunes down to D and plays the old songs on. He only played the good old SG on In Circles. I wonder why only on that song. But yea, he got this kind of blueish Les Paul. Not really a big deal, but...I have emotional attachment to the SG.
So then they played the standard 100 Million, Every Shining Time You Arrive combo. Followed by a beautifull perfomance of Song About an Angel... tear jerking. They played a moving performance of The Prophet, and probablly the best time I've ever seen them play the song How it Feels to be Something On, because they kept it on the right beat perfectlly!
After that they suprised me with the setlist. I was totally expecting them to play Rodeo Jones, then go offstage, come back and do the Circles, Roses, Daze encore. Dan says: "How'd you guys like to hear something off the pink record?" The crowd gets excited, I'm thinking "Rodeo Jones" all the way. Then they bust into Waffle. That was totally rad. So then I didn't have a clue what they were gonna do with the set, then  they play an amazing J'nuh. They just keep doing more and more stuff with the bridge part. On the first bridge Will was doing all this weird drumming that almost sounds like he's gonna get off beat (cause that's such a weird time anyway, for that bridge part) but then he kept it syncronized perfectlly. And on the second one he did the thing where he crashes the cymbols and bass drum faster and faster. It was awesome.
So they go offstage for a while, let the crowd get excited, and come back out and play In Circles. Moving, but Jeremy didn't sing the "you opened my eyes..." part. Which I abolutely love. Then the play Roses in Water, and end with Days Were Golden. You've probablly heard about the "hard" part. I LOVED that! Out of the blue in this totally mellow, laid back ending of Days Were Golen, I see Jeremy step on DISTORTION and start screaming something while William beats on his big ass fucking cymbols. They did this "hard part" 4 times, Jeremy put down his guitar, sang the thing from Day's Design, then walked off. Followed by Dan, then Joe, then finally William.
All in all, one of the best times I've ever seen them. I think I'm giving up on trying to decide which show is my favorite one. They're all just too damn good. To those people who were saying they video taped this show, would you be able to trade for something? I have a VERY nice selection of rare shows and sunny day stuff. e-mail me privately. I can't wait to get my 20 something pictures back and I can't wait to SEE THEM ALL OVER AGAIN!!!

Matthew Thomas Carlson III <mattcarlson@angelfire.com>

Everyone's reviews all seem to be about right:  it was a great show, as
always (this was my fourth).  They seem to mix up J'nuh every time and I'm
equally impressed each time.  The emotional intensity that they play with
hits me everytime.  They are the greatest.

One new thought, though.  I found it interesting how eerie and dark The
Blankets Were the Stairs was.  The intro was awsome, of course, and then
they seemed to mix up the drums a bit, giving it an offbeat feel to it.
Maybe it was the Dan's distortion and feedback that gave it such a dark
touch.  Still an amazing song.  Just wondering if anyone else noticed this.

05/26/99...university of oregon, eugene, or...

hey everyone!

well, after a lovely four hour drive (who, me speed? naaaahhh....), i just
got home from the eugene show. it was a pretty incredible show i must say. i
just wish there were some people there. it was a HUGE room, and a VERY small
crowd. especially for the opening bands Juno and Lucky Me, both of whom are
seattle bands and both of whom were pretty darn cool.
anyways, this is an SDRE list, so i will talk about them. i'll start off
with the set list (note a few changes):

pillars
guitar and video games
the blankets were the stairs
100 million
every shining time you arrive
song about an angel
the prophet
roses in water
j'nuh
in circles
days were golden

(now when they started playing days, i was surprised, cuz it was a short
set. then, they all walked off in typical fashion, but the house lights
stayed off. so the crowd started cheering for an encore. then the house
lights came on, and everyone was kinda confused for a minute. but then
people started clapping again. then, joe stuck his head out and everyone
started REALLY clapping and cheering. so they came out for an encore, which
dan said they weren't planning on doing, but we made such great noise that
they did it anyway.....i gotta say, for so few people, we sure made a lot of
noise.)

encore:
how it feels to be something on
rodeo jones

so basically, it was the same songs as usual, just in a different, crazy
order. it was the first time i had ever seen them end on something other
than days were golden. kinda liked this set order though. will be
interesting to see what they do in the next few shows.
well, as much as i would love to write more at this point, i am pretty dead
tired, and i gotta get up at some halfway decent time today so i can get up
and drive back down to the Portland show (which i know for a fact at least
Juno will be playing at as well, cuz i talked to their singer after the
whole thing was over). so it should be another cool show. for those of you
going to the show, look for me if ya want. i'll be wearing a black Who's
Your Daddy? (a Tacoma band) t-shirt, and it has a big question mark on it.
so if ya see me, be sure to say hi and stuff.
take care everyone. =)

05/27/99...crystal ballroom, portland, or...

Ha! I beat Agnes and John home. They're probably still waiting outside on
the steps. At first, when sdre played, i thought, "wow. seeing sdre is
kind of like what the government says doing heroin is like. the first time
you're all: woo hoo! my life has changed in a weird, wonderful way. Then,
you know, it's just like those ads tell you, something about "'You'll want
to feel as good as you did the first time...but you'll die trying.'"
Not that i wasnt enjoying myself....but it felt better the first time i
saw them. But that changed and shiz, fucking fuck they put on a good show.

Here are my list of highlights:

    * Seeing Dan all happy.
    * WILLIAM GOLDSMITH
    * Jeremy breaking a string on "the prophet"
    * The prophet, all on its own, cause it owns.
    * WILLIAM GOLDSMITH dropping his stick in "the blankets were the
staris" and fucking pulling another one out in like 1/70 of a second.
Then, later on in the song, the drumstick splits. at the end of the song
he threw it over his shoulder.
*WILLIAM GOLDSMITH, gets 2 cause he fucking owned.

werd,

Jane. <femme@europa.com>

heyas. =)

yeah, so what jane beat me home? could it be partly cuz she LIVES in
portland, and i had to drive to tacoma? hmmmm.... =P and hey, i should get
some kudos for doing a report at 4 am. (by the way, we left before they came
out).
so yeah, the show rocked. right up front for a change. i usually tend to
hang out closer to the back, but i just wanted to see what it was like from
up there. same openers as the eugene show. Juno just rocks. i liked em even
better this time. (OTS, they have a show in Seattle on the 6th of June with
some other bands, a benefit show of some sort...i don't remember where, but
their singer said it's advertised in the rocket, and they have a website you
can get to by going to the UBL and typing in Juno in the search field. i
recommend it highly.). anyways, back to SDRE.
played a more standard style set this time. that being...

in circles
pillars
guitar and video games
the blankets were the stairs
100 million
song about an angel*
every shining time you arrive*
the prophet
how it feels to be something on
roses in water
j'nuh

-encore-
rodeo jones
days were golden

*-on the setlist, they had these songs in reverse order. i think they played
"angel" first because something was wrong with joe's standard tuning bass.
he knocked it over during "blankets", and it wasn't in it's stand during
"angel"

so yeah. went back to playing in circles first, which i thought was cool. i
like it both ways, so it's all good with me. as Jane already aluded (sp?)
to, i met her and saw Agnes again at the show. it was a fun time. two down,
two to go (with a big =P to Agnes....gawd i'm mean....heh heh).
what else can i say about the show....my mind is empty right now cuz i'm so
freakin tired i think. oh yeah....there was this one guy who between every
single song kept yelling for them to play "what it's like", and one time
said "what it's like to be something on". after that one, dan said "you've
ALmost got it!" which got a laugh from the crowd. i found it humourous. i
mean, it's one thing to yell requests, even if they always stick to the
setlist, but at least get the freakin song title right, eh? *laughs*
okay, i'm gonna check out the rest of my mail then go to bed. hope you all
have great fridays. take care. =)

john <little_psycho1@hotmail.com>

Yo dudes...
So I just got home to Seattle from Portland because unlike John I had a motel
room and didn't have to drive home at 2 in the morning (haha).
The show was perfect for me...I feel totally the opposite of Jane.  My first
time seeing them I was shaking, and could hardly breath.  The whole
experience was a sensory overload.  That can be good in some ways but this
time I just enjoyed the music.  The emotions were there, but they didn't get
in the way. I hope you people know what I mean.  I totally know what Jesse is
saying about Sunny Day being an orgasmic experience.  I loved the atmosphere
of the Ballroom.  It felt intimate.
John, my friend Lizy and I waited for over an hour after the show for them,
but finally I had to go cuz my friend Lizy was about to murder me.  It was
kinda funny.  We were the only three concert goers left outside of the club.
I really wanted to stay, but oh well.  There will be a next time.
So, yeah, they rocked as always.  I would just like John to know that I don't
like him because he is 21.  Thank you.

*Agnes* <BlueGrl713@aol.com>

05/29/99...richards on richards cabaret, vancouver, b.c....

hey everyone. =)

well, i don't have a ton of time right now, but i just thought i'd let all
you setlist fans know what SDRE played up in vancouver. same stuff as usual,
but here it is anyways....

pillars
guitar and video games
the blankets were the stairs
100 million
every shining time you arrive
song about an angel
the prophet
how it feels to be something on
rodeo jones
j'nuh

-enc-
in circles (which aaron the guitar guy accidentally gave dan the
wrong guitar on at first so he was off key....d'oh!)
roses in water
days were golden

so yeah. the show was very cool, probably my fave of this grouping so far,
probably because it was more of an intimate setting as opposed to the huge
ballrooms. can't wait to see em again tonight at the break room.
and another cool part of the whole vancouver deal was meeting fellow lister
Chrystal, who is a very cool gal if i may say so. (my check's in the mail
right? =P just kidding).
so anyways, i'm gonna go eat now. have a great holiday weekend everyone, and
i'll be back later most likely with a report of the Seattle show, unless i
crash first. i will also have a log of total miles i've driven to get to all
these shows and back. it's pretty crazy. take care everyone. =)

john <little_psycho1@hotmail.com>

05/30/99...breakroom, seattle, wa...

hey everyone!

well, this may end up not bein the best written e-mail ever, cuz i am dead
tired right now, but i wanted to get this out while i was thinking about it.
just got home after dropping my friend Jason off after the Break Room show.
the show was quite cool. the band played well (i honestly can say i don't
think i've ever seen them play badly), and the atmosphere was REALLY great.
the crowd was really loud and into the music. it was hotter than the 7th
level of Hades in there, i'll tell ya that much. the set list was identical
to the Vancouver show, so refer to that. let's see....oh yeah, one cool
thing. there was this overhead light deal that was shining on about the
first five "rows" of people, and Dan kept asking it be turned off, i think
cuz the people up front wanted it off. so midway through "100 million",
someone under the light got on some other guys shoulders and unplugged it,
drawing a large cheer from the crowd which could even be heard over the
music. i found it kind of interesting that it happened during that song,
since one of the lines in the song is "who turned the light out?"
anyways....oh, and one other point of interest. the show was videotaped.
they had one of those signs on the door saying that it was and that by
entering you allow use of your likeness etc. etc. i don't know what the
taping was for, but it was good equipment, so it must have been something
cool.
well, that's about it on that show. it was the end of my four times seeing
SDRE in five days experience. i will be glad to be getting a lot of sleep
today, though i will miss seeing the shows. here are some tidbits about my
adventures....

four places i saw shows: eugene, or; portland, or; vancouver,
                          b.c.; seattle, wa
total miles driven: 1286 (all by me)
list members i saw at shows: 4 (agnes, jane, shaun, chrystal)
people that were with me that saw SDRE live for the first time: 3
my personal favourite-
SDRE performance: vancouver
opening band performance: Juno-portland show (they played in eugene
too, but i liked the portland performance better)
venue: i can't say; they all had certain cool things about them
quote: "okay, everyone in the back, STOP PUSHING."- a line jokingly said by
Dan at the Eugene show, cuz there were only about 40 people in a big huge
ballroom

so there's a synopsis of sorts of my experiences. if anyone wants to know
more or has any kinds of questions, let me know and i'll get back to you on
it. i'll just end by saying it was an experience i'll never forget, and even
as sick of driving as i am right now, if i could do it again i would. =)
take care and sunny days to everybody everywhere.
