the days were golden
i was at the nyc show in july, this was years better. maybe because
i
knew all the songs, but there was something in the stuff from lp2 that
really transcended. "rodeo jones" especially. that second verse, "across
the OCEAN, where my heart BENDS" incredible. surprisingly awesome was
"the prophet" with jeremy vocalizing and then the guitars paid the
song
some more justice then it does on the album. equally great was the
reflective moment in "the days..." when the band walked off, and its
was
just will playing. sensational, but im sure you know well.
Donald Mahoney <mahonedo@bc.edu>
For the third time since they reformed i went to go see sunny day real
estate. I brought an ex-girlfriend who is moderately into
them (if she
hated them we would of broken up much sooner) and a friend who is
growing to them. We hopped in my mothers car (my car is a two-seater)
and drove for three hours to historic boston mass. We sat
in traffic
for a while but we finally got to our destination. Parking was
only 6
bucks, as opposed to $21 for the last two shows at Irving Plaza in
NyC.
When we walked in the first band was already on (no clue what their
name
was) and at first they were kinda cool. They jammed alot and
they were
real loud..... After the 3th 10 minute song that made my ears bleed
I
decided they weren't all that. The second band was a little
bit better
but very boring, which it takes talent to make music boring.
Then there
was sunny day...... Actually then there was waiting over 40 minutes
for
sunny day..... That sucked but once they came out i could
give a shit
about those lost 40 mins. They opened with "in cicles"
and the place
went nuts. Then went into "pillars" which was amazing and then
they did
"guitar and videogames." Then something happened. I can't
explain
what actually happened but everything got really intense. The
crowd
started screaming like crazy and Dans face lit up and jeremy's face
got
real intense and dan put his guitar up against his amp and then they
bust into "the blankets were the stairs." Something mystical
happened
to that place after that point. They had more energy than a punk
band
and more emotion than, than, well i dont know what but they had alot
of
freakin' emotion. When they played "the prophet" Jeremy
screamed
everything after "Will you carry me accross the sea" and i mean
screamed!!! His eyes were popping out of his bright red head,
spit was
flying everywhere.... It was so fucking intense. "waffle" blew
my mind.
"Estya" & "100 million" were numbing. "Tspf" was insane.
Before
"HIFTBSO" Dan said "so, ya know, we have a new album out (insert crazy
applause here) and this is thee song." Which i thought was hysterical
once i figured out what he meant by "thee." Then "rodeo jones" made
just
about everyone in the place break down and cry (ok, so i'm exageraing
a
little, but i cried during the prophet if that means anything) Then
they
left the stage. Then they came back on the stage. "J'nuh"
was unreal.
"roses in water" was religious (and i'm not but it still was for me)
and
"days were golden" made me cry again. Actually i didnt really
cry, i
just got a little welled up. So what, i'm a wimpy emo fag.
Then after
the show there were a bunch of people talking to dan near the booth
where his wife was peddling stuff. I walked up and listened (he
didn't
say anything we don't already know) but i couldn't bring myself to
say
anything. Actually after every sunny day show i've ever
been to I get
all tongue tied afterwards, and being near dan just made it a hundred
times worse. I just waved to him in a real dorky way and he gave me
a
big smile back.
Overall, it was the best night of my life.
I'm sorry to post twice, but i just reread my last post and it is the
most horribly written thing ever. I made the build up of bringing
people who weren't big time into sunny day and i never went back to
that
point to tell you what they thought. Well, they both were amazed.
Also,
those are all the songs they played but that is not the exact order
(for
those of you keeping score at home). Jesus that email sucked
though,
and i am thinking of changing over to be an english major. Shit.
Famousmortimer <famousmortimer@worldnet.att.net>
ok. so that's the last time i go see sdre. dont get me
wrong, i love the
band, and they were fucking unreal. i mean they were in top form
last
night. but the shit you have to go through just isn't worth it.
whenever
i see sdre, i end up paying $800, standing in line forever, get a
body-cavity search on the way into the show.. and the crowd.
i dont know
where these people come from. i saw the promise ring the night
before,
and people were relaxed. and happy. and could breathe.
here's the run
down on the boston show. karma is some techno club that for whatever
reason has bands from time to time. and some jackass decided
taht this
would be good place for sunny day to play. so we'd called a bunch
of
times trying to figure out what time the show was, and no one at karma
could tell us anything, but our tickets said doors were @ 6, so we
showed
up around 6:30. anyway, there was already a line outside so we
waited in
that for about 10 mins. then we get inside where the lighting/sound
guy
is warming up the smoke machine (??) and the strobe lights (??).
so my
friend and i hung around for a while until the first band (6 by 7,
i
think) came on. they were miserable. like radiohead but
worse. but no
one was booing them or anything. some of us clapped after their
songs,
just to be nice, but the crowd was just pretty quiet. but the
band got
pissy because we weren't making enough noise and when they were getting
off their guitarist tossed her beer out at the crowd and they were
just
general assholes. then the club played oldies for a while until
the next
band, who would be a great bar band for the 35-50 set, came up.
they were
pretty slow and just out of place. after 30 minutes of the mellowest
music i'd ever heard the guitarist announced that they were going to
"mellow it out a little bit." but this band was just happy to
be there
and played there songs and had a good attitude about it so they get
points
from me.
anyway, it was during the second band that the crowd just really started
to piss me off. first off everyone's personal space was about
zero by
halfway through their set. and then the tall guys squeeze in
in front of
me. i'm not a giant myself, but i am 6' and these guys just kind of
wrestled their way in and put their big heads between me and the stage.
and of course everyone was doing the slow-motion, wrestling for position,
where your tense all the time and trying to keep some guy from slipping
his shoulder in front of yours and everybody's just pissed at everybody
else. so then a bunch of frat-looking guys come in, quickly followed
by
perfume soaked girls (where did these people come from). so the
frat guys
are talking about how they want to bang the two perfume girls, and
how
they're gonna charge the stage as soon as the music starts and who
looks
easiest to push out of the way. it reminded me of alterna-shows
i went to
in high skool.
i swear it was like lolla-fucking-palooza. i was wishing i could
cause
physical pain with my mind, or that they hadn't taken my gun during
the
body-cavity search. (don't write me about this. i didn't really
have a
gun) anyway, finally the band came on and the frat guys ran up
front and
i sort of stayed where i was as best i could. and sdre was fantastic.
alas, no song about an angel or red elephant, but such is life.
famousmortimer is right, j'nuh and waffle were both fucking amazing.
they
were far, far better than they were at Irving Plaza this summer, for
those
of you that were there. so you should probably check them out
this tour.
if you feel like braving the crowd. i dunno. i think karma
club just
knew that they were having a band play and that they needed opening
bands,
so they hired the first two bands they found. seriously, both
opening
bands were just in the wrong place. i wish i'd seen the prov
show with
764hero. but seriously, what is it about sdre, and no other emo
band,
that attracts these people? i mean, there were some real jackasses
at the
intelfest show as well. just a question. a very long, long
question.
sorry about that. if you actually read to the bottom of this
i'm sorry.
i know bitch, bitch, bitch.
gotta go.

CMJ SubPop showcase
Opening acts:
Heroic Doses- a very cool, funky, funky, rockin' instrumental act.
awesome drumming and guitar work.
Murder City Devils- this was my favorite opener. They totally
rocked.
Spinanes- I really didn't care for this band. They reminded me
of a
bad Bettie Serveert, with obvious attempts
at Sonic Youth noise.
They wouldn't stop playing. Sunny Day came on half past 12
because of
their indulgent feedback encore. When the lead
singer said they would
play only 2 more songs, she really meant
5. Belive me, we were
counting.
What can I say? It was an excellent performance.
Jeremy's voice soared.
They pretty much played the whole new album, with an older song every
two or three songs.

Notable moments (besides every moment of every song):
Dan said something like,
"At our show in Boston, a kid came up to me and said, 'You always say
that you just played your best show ever.' Each show keeps getting
better and better...This was a our best show so far!"
Some guy in the back kept screaming "Show us your cock. I wanna see
some
cock" while William was getting his drumset fixed.
When they ended the show with "the Days Were Golden," band members
left
one by one until only William remained. He continued to carry
the beat
for a while with everyone in the audience clapping along. (According
to
a friend, this is exactly how U2 used to end their sets with "40" as
the
closing number.)
Joseph Kim <jk754@columbia.edu>
ok....much of the same...but a quick run down
i didn't get to the show till most of the way through murder city devils.
(i
was at the get up kids show. everyone should have gone to this...it
kicked
ass. these guys are going to be very big soon, see them while
you can. email
me privitly for a setlist or any questions.)
the MCD weren't that good...but on the last song THEY HAD FIRE.
it was 80's
metal all over again. the drummer poured rubbing alchohol on
his cymbals set
the on fire. the second he hit them a blast went shooting up
to the ceiling.
bad band...kick ass fire. more bands need fire.
i don't feel like talking about the spinanes....they were good...la
la la.

SONG ABOUT AN ANGEL WAS AMAZING. THAT AND WAFFLE ARE THE 2 BEST
SONGS I'VE
EVER HEARD THEM PLAY. IT'S AMAZING THAT I (US ACTUALLY) MAY HAVE
ACTUALLY HAD
SOMETHING TO DO WITH THEM PLAYING IT. THANKS!
they were selling posters this time...5 bucks. same t-shirts
and records
dan and jeremy kept trying to talk to the audience...but kept getting
drowned
out by the screeming
the audience was very very very cool...very into it and no hard moshing.
"so, at the boston show, so kid comes up to me and asks me...dan, you
say that
every show you play is your best show...how is that? well, i
think they get
better everytime. so, as fucking cheeseball as it is, let me
say that this is
the best show ever." - dan. (followed by a complete crowd erruption)
i love that dan actually looks at the audience and answers them back....they
really love the fans.
after about every song, dan just said...thanks so much, or this is
really
great. he was loving it.
after the show...hung out by the band exit yet again. just can't
help being a
cheesy fan
will came out and ran into a cab...again. why does he do this
after every
show?
dan didn't stay around long at all. he came out and signed some
stuff.
everyone told him it was an amzing show, he thanked us repeatedly for
coming.
this is the 3rd time i've harrassed him..so my friend and i asked him
if he
remembered us. "yeah, of course, i remeber you guys perfectly."
add great
amounts of sarcasm...but he still a great guy. he got on the
bus.
joe came out, he seemed surprised people actually wanted to talk to
him. th
first thing he said was "hi, jeremy's coming out now." but he
was really
nice. someone asked if they would play theo b..."yeah, definatly
soon, that's
my favorite song." we thanked him for pushing for more old stuff.
"no
problem, thats what i want play." i thanked him for playing song
about an
angel. at that point everyone just starting yeling out everyone
song they
wanted to hear...to with joe responded, yea.ok.yea.ok. he did
have food and
rent tatooed acrose his knuckles..strange but a nice guy.
jeremy...signed a bunch of stuff. i told him angel was beautiful..."thanks
a
lot." if you've never talked with him, he responds to everything
with either
"yea, totally" or "yea, thanks alot" or somthing to that extent.
someone told
him he has an amazing screem. he didn't seem to know what he
was talking
about, so the kid added during prophet. "oh, really? i'm
a little worried
about that part. i can't scream, morrison, he's the best screamer.
but
thanks." you coming back to new york soon? "yea, totally."
that show really
was the best. "thanks so much. it felt great being there.
it's like, when
you're up there, you just feel.......huge. but how could you
not. it was
really great. i was relly into it." are there new songs?
"well, skeletons of
new songs. we have somethings that are pretty much done, but
i need good
lyrics. we're working on it." so there will definatlybe
a next album? "oh,
yea, of course. there will be 8 or 10 next albums. then
it gets hard. see
when you hit 40, you just can't be in a band anymore. it doens't
work." (i
thought that was really funny). that's when you turn to solo stuff.
"yeah,
totally" will you ever play abagail anne with the band?
"no, not that
stuff....i mean...no."
that was about it...some other stuff i can't remember. it was
really cold out
and he stayed around talking for a while.
i love this band.
virginia <Vbm923@aol.com>
hello to all the nyu kids i saw and to those guys in the front who looked
like
they'd died and gone to heaven....that's what fans really are.
i'd have to say that in all the shows i've seen of sunny day this tour..
this
one was just perfect.. golden... absolustely the best and most
amazing.. and
most incredibly sincere thing i've ever in my life experienced...
<Halocrutch@aol.com>
well, first off, i was the kid who asked jeremy about abegail anne,
and
commented on the screams in the prophet, which were fucking intense...
hi
everyone standing in the cold, freezing our fingers off... ok, well
a couple
things:
1) i asked joe if they would learn theo b and he said "yeah, hopefully"
or
something like that... then i asked about abegail anne and he said
"maybe."
but when i asked jeremy about it, he basically gave a flat out "no."
(he was
still nice, of course.)
2) I recorded the show, as well as the whole time jeremy was outside,
but he
speaks so softly that i don't think it really came out. the show came
out
great tho.
3) A guy had a very long conversation with Jeremy after he asked Jeremy
his
views on gays: "Jeremy, great show, etc... I just had to ask this question:
I'm gay. You're Christian, how do you feel about homosexuality?" Jeremy:
"Well, I am all for partnership... I mean I have 'buddies' and all,
but
anything sexual, no." Guy: "Oh, I'm really dissapointed."or something
like
that... etc... and this guy kept bugging Jeremy: "Well, I guess you
think I'm
gonna rot in hell, huh?" Jeremy replys: "Naaw, noo man, not at all.
None of
us, not me, not you, you, or you know what's going to happen... I just
hope I
have a happy place to be in the afterlife" or something to that extent.
So
then this guy is just hassling Jeremy and saying, "well, I just can't
support
someone with those views... I mean I love your band, I'll listen
to the first
two albums, but I couldn't buy the new one till I asked that question."
and
Jeremy was being sooo nice to this guy and he talked to him for so
long in the
cold... it was just surreal.
4) A note about Dan and sarchasm: I'm not sure he's capable of it..
he is so
completely nice about everything and seems to be honest. I asked about
a very
small show they played in my hometown about 4 years ago... they played
in a
church with about 4 people in attendance... I said, "Dan, do you remember
Westport, Connecticut?" His quick reply "Yup." So I thought he was
just trying
to make me happy, and I say, "No, really, it was a special show, it
was in a
church..." and before i finish, he says "Yup, yup, yeah there were
about 5
people there, and their mothers, and it was in the basement." and i
was just
astonished he remembered that.
5) I couldn't believe how long Jeremy stayed outside... it was sooo
cold, and
he was shivering, speaking very quietly. Yet, he made it a point to
hear what
each person wanted to say. Basically, it was "Great show, the best
show ever,
etc" over and over again. but he acknowledged everyone, saying "thanks,
thank
you" or "yeah totally." and he signed everything people handed him
(20 people
borrowed my sharpie). someone asked him what the strangest thing he
ever had
to sign was. he said "a butt." everyone laughed, and he said "no, maybe
a
dollar bill, i guess... nothing too wierd."
6) I took pictures and i think they're gonna be awesome... i'll put
them up on
a webpage or something when i get them developed.
7) Song About an Angel: It was as intense as you can imagine, I was
going
bonkers as was the band... One note here: The person who requested
it was
right near me and actually said, "Song for an Angel!" and that's when
Dan said
"Did someone just say "Song About and Angel? I guess we have to play
that."
Does anyone know if it was actually on the setlist, or did they add
it? I
assumed it was already on the setlist.
ok, that's it for now until i think of more..
-Joe <SomeNirv@aol.com>
it was amazing. just absoluetly amazing. i am soooo impressed.
jeremy's
voice just floored me. he was right on every song. and
the gutiar player (i
don't know his name) was just so into the show. the enthusiasim
of that guy.
and the songs they played, what a selection. i am not one of
you guys -- i'm
not a die hard fan from way back -- but i left the show just as excited
as if
i had been listening to them for half my life.
Jessica <Nymphs@aol.com>
Brian (Ansigod) McCall <bpmccal@hubcap.clemson.edu>
yes indeed, sunny day rocked the shit last night at the cat's cradle.
it was
the most amazing show i'd ever seen!!! i was just absolutely
blown away. i
was so pumped all day, and i remained so throughout the night.
heroic doses'
drummer was amazing. he hit his shit, fucking hard. i caught
a stick after
the show, and i showed it to will later and asked if it was his, and
he says
"no, that's ryan's from heroic doses. hang on to it, because
one day it's
gonna be worth a whole lot more than my stick!" dan was
sooooo nice, i let
him use my sharpie for one thing and he ended up signing like 30 things.
he
talked to me about subpop and how much they screwed them over.
they're
looking for a big label. he also says they hope to embark on
a large scale
tour soon. i asked joe bass if he was gonna be the permanent
guy and he said
"yeah, i think so" food+rent tee hee. everyone came out
after the show
except jeremy, he never showed up with his bearded self :(
amazing night!
Dave
ps-there were 2 guys taping it on video, i've already arranged a trade.
FumbleBaby@aol.com
i was at cat's cradle last night. very good. they played iscaraciad
for the
forst time. i got there at 6:00 and since the doors didn't open
till 8:00 we
sat around outside and then went to a little pizza place. while we
were eating
jeremy came out of the club to smoke so i talked to him for a sec and
got his
autograph. then while we were eating dan came in and ordered a pizza.
then
will came out. i didn't see joe till after the show. we stayed
outside
afterwards for awhile. dan came out first and talked to people for
a while.
then will and joe came out. will made the comment that the show was
kinda
weird and funky???? then yes jeremy DID come out. he was so super nice
to
everybody. i asked him about his new record and he said he has about
20 songs
demoed but it'll be awhile before recording. will kept trying to get
him to
leave and go to a bar but jeremy kept saying "no i'm ok" and stayed
to talk to
people. we finally left at 12:45 and he was still out there. he's the
fucking
man. i'm going to ziggy's tomorrow. sorry this was so damn long. later
xoxo
noah <Witness0@aol.com>
I don't have an official setlist or anything like that. Maybe I'll post
a
review if no one else does within a couple of days for the Chapel Hill
(Carrboro) show. I can remember the songs, just not the exact
order.
Anyway, they played "Iscarabaid" last night. Dan said it was the
first
time they had ever played it live. It was pretty damn good.
Jeremy
definitely says "I'm tired of you, you're tired of me" and "What's
wrong
with me? I'm tired of you." It was really clear.
He also threw in some
"Same sign"'s a couple of times. Just in case you wanted to know.
This one dude was videotaping every word Jeremy had to say afterwards
outside the club. It was weird.
kit cabell <kcabell@netstartincorporated.com>
The first two bands were really good. The opening band was called
Scout (i think) and they were really good. The lead guitarist used
an
e-bow a lot and he was really good. And their vocalist was good too.
Then the second band was from Chicago. Their name was ______ Dos. I
forgot what it was. But they were really good. The drummer was AMAZING!!
That guy had a really small set but he was still awesome. Before they
took the stage I ran into William Goldsmith. He was really nice. I
wished him good luck for the show and he signed my poetry book. Then
SDRE took the stage. They exceeded my expectations. After hearing their
stuff online i thought that Jeremy would mess up on some of the vocals,
but he hit everything perfectly. They opened with in circles, which
really got the crowd going. The band was really happy with the turn
out.
After each song Dan or Jeremy would thank the audience. People were
constantly yelling out song titles, and one guy yelled out "Play
whatever you want" Dan started laughing and thanked him. The best part
of the whole show is when they played iscaribaid. They said it was
the
first time that they've ever played it live before, and it's my favorite
song off of lp2 so i was ecstatic. All and all, it was the best
experience of my life. And after the show I got a drum stick from a
stage hand who was throwing them out. They played with A LOT more
emotion than i expected. If they come anywhere near your town, go see
them. It is really worth it.
